Introduction

In this course, we will discuss complex interaction between management (employers) and labour (employees) in industries and organizations. Understanding this interaction becomes necessary for promotion of harmony in the workplace in order to enhance productivity. We will discuss meaning, origin and theories of union, industrial dispute, collective bargaining and roles of psychologists in maintaining industrial harmony.  

Learning objectives

The objective of the course is to enable students understand roles they could plays in reducing industrial dispute for maximum productivity in industries and organizations.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the lessons, students will be able to:

1. Explain the meaning of union, management and labour- management relations.

2. Explain the origins of union, theories of origins of union as well as development of union in Nigeria.

3. Identify causes, types, forms of industrial disputes as well as its management and prevention strategies.

4. Explain the meaning of  collective bargaining.

5.  Identify and explain key psychological concepts in analysis of union management relations.

6. Identify and explain roles of social and industrial psychology in the development and maintenance of industrial and labour harmony.
