Molecular genetics is the field of biology that studies the chemical nature of genes and how it controls inheritance. It is related to, but not synonymous with Molecular Biology. Whereas molecular biology studies living things by studying their macromolecules (DNA, RNA, Protein, Lipids and Carbohydrates), molecular genetics focuses on DNA, its structure and function, and the mechanisms through which it controls the growth, development, and characteristics of an organism. Molecular genetics can therefore be considered to be a sub-discipline of molecular biology.
