Overview
This course introduces the scope and application of statistics within the sciences, focusing on its importance in experimentation, modeling, and problem-solving. Students will develop competence in describing data using measures of location, partition, and dispersion, and in applying probability theory to real-world scientific challenges.
The course covers a range of probability distributions (binomial, Poisson, geometric, hypergeometric, negative-binomial, normal, Student’s t, and chi-square), which are fundamental in analyzing natural and engineered systems. It also provides training in estimation techniques, hypothesis testing, and regression and correlation analysis for exploring relationships between variables.
Students will gain an introduction to non-parametric methods, contingency table analysis, and the design of experiments including analysis of variance (ANOVA), thereby preparing them to conduct rigorous scientific investigations and make evidence-based decisions.
